Nursing Assistant Charged with Injuring 83-Year-Old Dementia Patient

Groven Glenn, a 52-year-old nursing assistant at the Park Ridge Living Center nursing home in Greece, New York, was arrested in February 2013 for injuring and assaulting an 83-year-old female dementia patent under his care. Glenn was charged with one felony count of Endangering the Welfare of a Vulnerable Elderly Person or an Incompetent or Physically Disabled Person in the Second Degree. Glenn later pled guilty to the crime and was sentenced to three-years probation and is required to attend mental health counseling. Park Ridge Living Center terminated Glenn’s employment as a result of the incident.

Glenn reacted to the incident by throwing a chicken bone at the resident. Glenn was then caught on video camera wheeling the resident in her wheelchair and slamming her against a door. As a result, the resident suffered bruising and abrasions to her left knee and ankle.

Catherine Wagner of the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, described the videotaped incident. She said, “The door opened out and not in, so he slammed her into the door, he pulled the wheelchair back and opened the door and put her into the room, causing injury.”
Glenn acknowledged his actions. He stated, “I was pissed, got angry and couldn’t control myself.”

After the Department of Health began investigating the incident, the agency then referred the matter to the Attorney General’s office. Commenting on Glenn’s arrest, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman stated, “When a family entrusts a loved one to the care of a nursing home, they expect courtesy, kindness and professionalism from those assigned to care for that person. Today’s charges reflect my commitment to protecting our most vulnerable citizens, including the elderly and disabled, from abusive caregivers. We will continue to aggressively prosecute anyone who abuses seniors in their care.”
